Some write it one way, others the other. Which is it? More importantly, what is it? It includes the study of astronomy, astrology, and the science of timekeeping. Easy, right? Not so easy, then, is what we call an astrologer. You can refer to the glossary at the back of this book see page [x-ref ] to familiarize yourself with the Sanskrit terminology involved in chart readings. What, then, do we call female astrologers? If you want to use Sanskrit terms, you would make the last a sound in daivajna or kalajna long. As a Sanskrit joke goes, what stands between a man and a woman is often the length of a vowel. Alternately, you may use the more specific term jyotishini. I also met those who, for whatever reason, refused to share the techniques they used. This attitude of holding on to secrets, uncommonly common among astrologers, ultimately diminishes the Jyotisha tradition and the astrologers who practice it, because as stewards of a royal science we have an obligation not only to advance our own understanding but, by putting forth our research, to promote the science itself.

During the twentieth century some of the finest researchers were also the greatest teachers of Jyotisha; Dr. Raman, K. Krishnamurti, and Sheshadri Iyer not only developed new techniques of prediction, they wrote books to share their knowledge. Rather than being diminished by this, they grew in stature, by pumping the next generation of astrologers with the fuel needed to take the vehicle of Vedic astrology higher. One hundred years ago astrologers had never heard of terms like sublords and ruling planets; we have K. Krishnamurti to thank for bringing these to light. Yogis and avayogis, terms now commonly used in modern Jyotisha, were little known outside of southern India before Sheshadri Iyer came along to elucidate them. New techniques constantly refresh the Jyotisha tradition and enliven discussion, though, again, it is not techniques that make an astrologer great, but rather the skill and insight that he or she has developed to use the available techniques.

I have seen masters read horoscopes from the back of napkins and make astounding predictions. I have also seen less skilled astrologers—myself among them—wrapped up in reams of data and printouts still fail to predict their way out of a bag. Jyotisha is a living, breathing tradition. It takes rigorous study, self-­ sacrifice, and spiritual cultivation to become worthy of having it live inside you. It also takes generosity—the generosity of passing on to the next generation the fruits of your dedication.

The following, then, is my attempt to add a drop of lore into the ocean that others have filled with rivers of their wisdom. Caution: This book should not be construed as an endorsement of gambling, which is illegal throughout most of the world, potentially addictive, and spiritually and psychologically difficult to digest. This is a rare and often dangerous path reserved for a few. A wider definition, however, tells us that anyone who risks something to be themselves, to share their purpose with the world, is a type of gambler. Anyone who carves out new roads, sometimes butting up against painful dead ends, sometimes clearing the way to an undiscovered country, gambles with their comfort, livelihood, or reputation. But a person driven by purpose will go to the ends of the earth to share it. A snapshot of the heavens at the moment a baby is born, a question is asked, or a match is played can reveal how that life, question, or competition will play out.

To do this, astrology uses a map of the sky drawn for a particular space-time event to judge its potential. This is the core precept of astrology as I understand it. This space-time map is commonly represented in Western astrology by a ­circle, as seen in the chart on page 2. While the Western depiction is perhaps a closer representation of the heavens, there are a number of reasons why we opt for the square shape in Vedic astrology. Vedic astrology is a vidya—an inspired, living body of knowledge that is part of a family of vidyas that includes ayurveda, vastu shastra, tantra, mantra, and others that comprise the Vedic lineage. In depicting the sky as a square, Jyotisha perhaps borrows from its sister science vastu shastra, which says that square shapes are inherently more stable than their curvilinear counterparts. That is also why settled human civilizations tend to favor squarish plots and dwellings, while nomadic tribes prefer to live in circular enclosures like yurts and teepees, which mirror the evanescent and ever-changing flow of nature.

If you want never-ending change and excitement, prefer the circle. The predictive tendency of Vedic astrology is evidenced in this book, where we attempt to fix the outcome of an event before it has even begun. We will use two variants of the square chart—the North below and South page 5 Indian variants. These houses are fixed, meaning that the rhomboid represented by Roman numeral I is always the 1st house, while VII is always the 7th house. The remaining houses are numbered accordingly. What changes in this type of chart is the signs. The opposite is true in the South Indian chart, wherein the signs remain fixed while the houses change. Thus the square that indicates Ari Aries is always Aries, while its adjacent squares are Pisces to the left and Taurus to the right.

The ascendant or lagna, or 1st house is indicated by Asc. Both the North Indian chart on page 3 and the South Indian chart on page 5 indicate a Sagittarius ascendant. Both formats require some practice to get used to. In fact, it is not uncommon for astrologers with expertise in one chart style to have trouble reading the other. Depending on where you learn Vedic astrology and from whom , you will likely favor one or the other. The Houses Each house, called a bhava in Sanskrit, depicts a part of the human experience.

Of course, there are more detailed significations for each house. In fact, anything and everything that exists has to be represented by one or more of the twelve bhavas: toenail fungus, particle physics, and great-grandmothers all have their houses, while other matters may span multiple bhavas.
